Do you love salmon, but wonder where to buy the cleanest varieties?

Or, does the price alone send you shopping for less expensive protein?

We have great news for salmon lovers! There are many companies that sell clean, wild-caught salmon for reasonable prices, and we are excited to share them with you. Wild-caught salmon is one of the healthiest fish to enjoy, due to its rich Omega 3 fatty acids.

However, it’s also one of the most commercialized fish, and most salmon in grocery stores is famed, not wild. These salmon reach maturity in tanks that can hold up to 70,000 fish! Don’t buy farmed salmon. Besides supporting an inhumane and toxic industry, farmed salmon are fed poor diets, sedatives (yes, really), insecticides, anti-microbials and antibiotics, just like conventionally raised cattle.

It IS possible to farm seafood in a healthy way that actually contributes to the environment and increases the fish population. The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program has created fishing practices that we celebrate and support, and small “organic” fisheries are springing up worldwide.

And, more good news: No, Fukishima did not render salmon, or fish in general, inedible. Research has shown that radiation levels have fallen to safe levels in the ocean, where it is monitored regularly by dedicated scientists.

Now, onto where to buy safe salmon! Here are some of the best companies to reach out to for delicious, fresh, frozen, smoked and canned salmon:

wildalaskancompany.com

bluecirclefooads.com

cedarplankfoods.com

Costco Brand Northwest Fish Wild Alaskan Salmon

FairhavenBaySeafoods.com

Tridentseafoods.com

HelloFresh.com, Delivery Service

Gortons.com

Foppenseafood.com

My personal favorite is VitalChoice.com, and I’ve enjoyed their delicious wild-caught canned salmon for cost-effective lunches and dinners. They also sell fresh and frozen!

By all means, buy local, and if you can find wild-caught salmon from your neighborhood seafood purveyor, do it! But if not, please take advantage of the resources above, and know you are taking not only great care of your body (and taste buds!) but protecting these exquisite fish, and the oceans that sustain us all.
